Dutch military to adopt LiveDrop’s secure data transfer tech

The Dutch Ministry of Defense has selected LiveDrop’s offline optical data transfer technology to secure its most sensitive communications. The Eindhoven-based startup, in partnership with advisory firm CGI, will integrate its patented protocol into the military’s IT infrastructure. The solution uses dynamic visual codes displayed on screens and captured by cameras, eliminating reliance on Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or radio signals. This deployment addresses a critical need for air-gapped data exchange in contested or hostile environments.

LiveDrop’s protocol transmits data via rapidly changing visual patterns, similar to QR codes but far more dynamic. One device displays the encoded data, while another captures it using a camera. The system operates without network connectivity, making it immune to jamming, spoofing, or interception. Current transfer speeds reach 700 kilobits per second, with tests underway for 2.6 megabits per second (Mbps) and future goals of 6 Mbps. Range varies by hardware: 13 meters for smartphones, 700 meters for commercial optics, and experimental distances of miles using telescopes. The technology supports encryption with temporary or permanent access keys, ensuring end-to-end security.

Military validation and deployment

The Dutch Ministry of Defense has technically validated LiveDrop’s solution, confirming its suitability for high-security environments. CGI’s role involves integrating the technology into existing military systems, enhancing interoperability and operational effectiveness. The deployment aligns with the ministry’s push for infrastructure-independent communication, a priority in modern warfare where digital silence is often critical. LiveDrop’s technology has also been piloted in Dutch hospitals and energy sectors, proving its dual-use potential.
